"PowerD" overview platform H2 storage
The H2-PowerD web atlas identifies potential locations for the production and use of green hydrogen in Germany. It highlights regions where renewable energies can be used effectively and hydrogen can be produced economically. The focus is particularly on the H2 potential of the industrial and transport sectors and the regional use of waste heat. The atlas thus creates a reliable basis for preparing political decisions, supporting planning processes, and enabling scientific analyses.

Challenge
Green hydrogen is considered a key factor for sector coupling and thus for the success of the energy transition. According to the National Hydrogen Strategy, Germany aims to build up an electrolysis capacity of 10 gigawatts by 2030. But where can suitable locations be found where hydrogen can be produced in a climate-friendly way using wind and solar power and used in close proximity to potential customers? This is exactly where the H2-PowerD web atlas comes in: it highlights potential locations and shows what a sustainable hydrogen network could look like.
Implementation
The technical basis of the web atlas is formed by research data from Fraunhofer ISE and Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. The interactive map can be filtered intuitively and customized individually, depending on the question or interest. Clicking on a location leads directly to more detailed information.
Impact
The web atlas makes complex data accessible both for research and for the interested public. Clear visualization and interactive functions provide guidance on a key future topic in energy supply. This also gives decision-makers in politics and administration concrete points of reference, for example, for assessing regional needs and as a basis for launching new hydrogen projects in a targeted manner.
